Amidst a backdrop of challenges and aspirations, the Bafut Council has set the stage for an active year ahead. During the Budget Orientation debate, the Bafut Council introduced a Clean City contest and outlined key projects for 2025.
Village committee chairpersons shared their proposed initiatives, including water extensions, road improvements, bridge
construction, and infrastructure enhancements like electricity, hospitals, and schools.
Acknowledging the challenges faced, Mayor Ngwakongoh Lawrence highlighted the council's financial constraints due to the Anglophone crisis.
Emphasizing the need for self-sufficiency, he urged collaboration between village committees and the council to boost revenue generation for project implementation.
Reflecting on the projects carried out in 2024, the Mayor acknowledged community feedback regarding project distribution and execution. Responding to concerns, he
explained that projects are assigned based on feasibility, but with the involvement of village committees, broader project execution across Bafut is envisioned.
A new initiative proposed a rotational project allocation system across Bafut villages for three years, aligned with budget planning.
Mayor Ngwakongoh Lawrence also disclosed approved projects, such as bridges over River Mezam and River Mbee, crucial for community safety.
Moreover, the 2025 Clean City contest was launched by Forkou Andelys, Divisional Officer of Bafut. This initiative aligns with UN-Habitat guidelines, focusing on cleanliness in public spaces like schools, markets, roads, and health facilities. The contest aims to enhance the aesthetics of the council area.
The event left village and neighbourhood committee chairpersons motivated to
enhance the living environment in Bafut. Additionally, Bamenda, the North West Region's capital, is set to host the 2025 World Habitat Day.
