Buea, South West Region - In the spirit of Ramadan, Matanga Hans Hilary Hamza, a renowned jurist, human rights advocate, and Regional Islamic Education Secretary for the South West Region, has embarked on a humanitarian mission to support Muslim widows and female-headed households.
For the second consecutive year, Hamza has distributed essential food items, including flour, rice, sugar, and vegetable oil, to vulnerable Muslim women in the Fako Division, in the South West Region. According to the Muslim faithful, this gesture is inspired by the Islamic principle of Zakat (charity), which emphasizes the importance of supporting those in need.
"I am moved by the spirit of compassion and the Islamic principle of Zakat to alleviate their hardship and enable them to participate fully in the blessings of Ramadan," Hamza explained.
The distribution exercise, which started on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, and will run for four days, targeted identified locations within the Fako Division, including Buea, Muyuka, Tiko, and Limbe. Beneficiaries, such as Fadimatou Bessem and Adiza Audu, expressed their heartfelt gratitude for Hamza's kindness.
"I'm overwhelmed with gratitude and joy," said Fadimatou Bessem, a resident of Buea Town. "The fact that the organizer has thoughtfully considered my household again this year is a testament to their compassion and kindness."
Adiza Audu, another beneficiary and resident of Class Quarter in Buea, added, "I'm deeply touched by the kindness shown today. May Allah continually bless and reward the organizer for this thoughtful consideration of Muslim widows and the broader Muslim community."
Hamza's initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on Muslim widows and female-headed households during the holy month of Ramadan. According to the Regional Islamic Education Secretary for the South West Region, the increased cost of living, coupled with the need to prepare meals for breaking the fast (Iftar) and pre-dawn meals (Suhoor), can be overwhelming for these vulnerable women.
Hamza's message to the Muslim community during this blessed month of Ramadan is one of compassion, unity, and reflection. "Let us strive to embody these values and strengthen the bonds of our Muslim faith. May this Ramadan bring peace, blessings, and prosperity to all."
As the holy month of Ramadan continues, Hamza's selfless act, which is solely financed by his person and supported by a few friends, serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting those in need and embodying the values of compassion, kindness, and generosity.
