In observance of World Autism Awareness Day, the Bamenda Regional Hospital has launched a week-long free screening program for children under 10 years old, particularly those exhibiting signs of developmental delays, such as difficulties speaking, learning in school, or displaying aggressive behavior towards their peers.
The initiative, which runs from April 2 to 4, 2025, aims to raise awareness about autism and provide early diagnosis and intervention for affected children.
Under the theme "Advancing Neurodiversity & the UN Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs," the hospital's Director, Dr. Denis Nsame, under the pediatric department has organized a comprehensive program to promote autism awareness and acceptance.
Dr. Kate Kan, a paediatric expert, explained the significance of autism awareness to Standard Chronicle: "Autism is a developmental disorder characterized by delays in communication, socialization, and interaction in children. Early identification and intervention are crucial for improving outcomes."
The Bamenda Regional Hospital's free screening program is led by Dr. Fomenky Cecilia and her team. Dr. Kan emphasized the importance of this initiative: "We are creating awareness about autism and providing free screening for children under 10. Parents can walk in, register, and have their children screened by our pediatric team."
Deciphering what autism entails, the paediatric expert explained that it is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent challenges in social communication, restricted interests, and repetitive behaviors. She emphasized the importance of raising awareness about this condition, as early and effective management can help these children cope better in life and integrate into society more successfully.
World Autism Awareness Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007 to promote autism awareness, acceptance, and inclusion globally. The day recognizes the contributions and strengths of individuals with autism while advocating for their rights and support.
The Bamenda Regional Hospital's initiative is a testament to the hospital's commitment to promoting autism awareness and providing essential services to the community. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to take advantage of this free screening program to ensure early diagnosis and intervention for their children.
