A shocking incident has rocked Cameroon, as a gendarme named Yemele, assigned to the 15th squadron in Yaoundé, allegedly stole 700 million FCFA from a Cotrava armored vehicle on April 11, 2025. The vehicle, registered as LT 307 LB, was transporting funds from Yaoundé to Bertoua.
The incident occurred when the driver, Bissim Léopold, 52, stopped at Akounou village to relieve himself. Three heavily armed individuals suddenly appeared, forcing Léopold to return to the vehicle. Surprisingly, gendarme Yemele seemed to cooperate with the attackers, who made off with a massive sum of money. After the heist, Yemele vanished, abandoning his uniform.
The commander, Lieutenant Colonel Nana was promptly informed and reported the incident to the mixed gendarmerie-police control unit in Nkometou. Authorities are now racing to locate Yemele and unravel the circumstances surrounding the theft. Notably, Yemele had been responsible for securing Cotrava's fund transports for several months prior to the incident, making the allegations even more shocking.
This incident raises concerns about security protocols and potential corruption within Cameroon's security forces. In recent years, there have been other cases of gendarmes being involved in criminal activities. For instance, a gendarme warrant officer was accused of killing four civilians in Touboro over a dispute involving 500 FCFA. Another incident involved gendarmes seizing counterfeit banknotes worth over 99 million FCFA in Douala.
