In a bid to restore order and uphold the rule of law, the Minister of Territorial Administration, Atanga Nji Paul, has issued a directive to put an end to the use of "gros bras" (strong muscles) in debt collection, evictions, and demolitions.
According to the Minister, these groups, often operating as private militias, have been hired by individuals to enforce their interests, frequently resorting to violence and brutality.
The minister's move comes in response to recurring reports of these groups being used in place of lawfully authorized law enforcement agencies. According to the minister, this practice is a serious threat to public order and security.
Citing relevant laws, including the 1997 law on private security activities and the 2023 law on debt recovery, Minister Atanga Nji Paul emphasized that the use of private militias is strictly prohibited.
In the directive, the minister reminded authorities that debt recovery and evictions should be carried out by the law, with the involvement of law enforcement agencies where necessary. He instructed authorities to take firm action to put an end to the activities of these "gros bras" in their respective areas of jurisdiction.
This move is seen as a significant step towards restoring the rule of law and protecting citizens' rights in Cameroon. The minister's directive is expected to have a positive impact on the security and stability of the country, particularly in areas where land disputes and debt collection issues have been a major concern.
