Unclaimed and Forgotten: Yaounde Central Hospital Alerts For Identification and Collection

Official list of the abandoned announced deceased.

Yaoundé Central Hospital has issued an appeal to the public to help identify 63 unclaimed bodies currently housed in its mortuary.

The hospital's Director, Prof. Pierre Joseph Fouda, revealed that some of these bodies have been there for an extended period, with one notable case dating back to May 7, 2021, over three years ago.

The hospital is urging families who may have lost contact with their loved ones to come forward and claim the bodies.
This initiative aims to restore dignity to the deceased and provide closure to potential relatives.

If no claims are made, the remains will be respectfully transferred to the Yaounde City Council for collective burial.
This issue highlights a broader global health crisis, where millions of dead bodies remain unidentified worldwide due to various factors such as humanitarian disasters, infectious disease outbreaks, and human trafficking.

The lack of identification not only denies individuals the respect they deserve but also poses practical challenges for authorities.
The Yaoundé Central Hospital, founded in 1933, is Cameroon's largest hospital and a key healthcare provider. With a capacity of 650 beds, it serves as a teaching hospital and offers critical services, including HIV/AIDS treatment and trauma care.
