In a landmark initiative aimed at enhancing water accessibility and promoting renewable energy, the Bafut Council has introduced solar-powered water pumps to all 54 villages in the municipality. This groundbreaking project was unveiled on Tuesday, June 15, 2025, during a ceremony attended by local leaders, community health representatives, and various stakeholders dedicated to sustainable development.
The initiative, valued at over 120 million francs CFA, seeks to address water scarcity while reducing dependence on non-renewable energy sources. Each village received a solar water pump system designed to provide clean and reliable water for both domestic use and irrigation, significantly improving living standards across the region.
During the launch event held at the Bafut Council Hall, Mayor Ngwakongoh Lawrence highlighted the importance of this initiative in the context of environmental sustainability and community health.
“This project is a game-changer for us. It’s not just about providing water; it’s about harnessing the power of the sun to deliver sustainable solutions for our communities,” the mayor remarked. “Adequate access to water will enhance public health, support agricultural activities, and uplift our local economies.”
Moreover, the initiative has garnered support from the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources, which recognizes the potential for solar power to address both energy and water scarcity challenges in rural areas. This partnership emphasizes a commitment to fostering innovative approaches to community development and local governance.
Community representatives, including chief Ngwaka Angeline of the Mankwi neighborhood, praised the Bafut Council for its visionary leadership. “This initiative highlights what effective local governance looks like. Access to clean water is fundamental to improving health and instilling a sense of pride and responsibility within our villages,” she stated. Angeline further encouraged residents to actively participate in the maintenance and use of the new systems.
Residents expressed their gratitude for the introduction of the solar water pumps, particularly as they face rising temperatures and prolonged dry seasons, which have made water access increasingly critical. The community has pledged to work collaboratively to ensure the effective functioning and management of the pumps.
Experts in water management and renewable energy have lauded the initiative, noting its alignment with national objectives aimed at improving water security, enhancing agricultural productivity, and promoting sustainable energy practices.
The Bafut Council plans to conduct training sessions focused on the maintenance of the solar systems and effective water management strategies over the coming months to guarantee the long-term success of the project.
Through this innovative program, Bafut is setting a new standard in resource management within the Northwest Region, paving the way toward a greener and more sustainable future for their communities.
