Renowned Nigerian Professor Wole Soyinka has issued a stark warning to Africans, cautioning against the dangers of trading one form of dependency for another. In a passionate address, Soyinka urged Africans to remain vigilant and not be swayed by the allure of new partnerships that may compromise their independence and sovereignty.
Soyinka specifically referenced the growing alliance between some African nations and Russia, warning that this new partnership may come at a steep price. "The Russia of today is an aggressor," he said. "It is a power pursuing its own agenda, often at the expense of truth, sovereignty, and peace."
The Nobel laureate emphasized the importance of true liberation, which he defined as "total, continuous, and sustainable." He urged Africans to learn from the past and not repeat the mistakes that have held them back for so long.
Soyinka's message was particularly pointed, directed at the leadership of Burkina Faso and Captain Ibrahim Traoré, but his words were meant for all Africans. "Our independence is not a bargaining chip," he declared. "It is not for sale, not to the West, not to the East — not to any power that sees us as a pawn in their global ambitions."
The professor's call to action was clear: Africans must stand together, with dignity and clarity, to write their own future. "The African future must be written by Africans — Free, Fearless, and Unshackled," he said.
Soyinka's words serve as a timely reminder of the importance of African agency and the need for the continent to chart its own course, free from external influence and manipulation.
