Yaoundé, Cameroon – Labour and Social Security Minister Grégoire Owona has issued a stern warning to Professor Maurice Kamto, leader of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM), regarding the potential disqualification of his presidential candidacy.
In a social media post, Owona indicated that Kamto's application could face rejection if submitted under the banner of his current political party or its affiliates.
Owona asserted that Kamto is fully aware of the legal ramifications of running as a candidate for the CRM or the Cameroon Forward Forces (FCC), particularly with respect to the “imperative mandate.” This legal framework binds elected officials to adhere to their party's platform, adding scrutiny to any candidacy submitted under these parties.
Gregoire Owona, Cameroon's Minister of Labour and Social Security. The Labour Minister also reminded the public of Kamto's history of withdrawing his candidacy at the last minute, as observed in the 2020 elections. He suggested that the opposition leader's recent attempts to attract defectors from the Social Democratic Front (SDF) would not necessarily strengthen his position.
“We would welcome him as an opponent,” Owona stated, expressing confidence in the electoral process and the public's understanding of its legal implications. He underscored that any potential unrest following a disqualification would likely stem from Kamto's own political maneuvers and provocations.
Prof Maurice Kamto, CRM National President.Owona concluded by emphasizing that any decision of rejection would be rooted in Kamto's own choices, urging him to reconsider his strategy in light of the electoral regulations.
