North West: Public Health Boss Cautions Media on Advertisements of Traditional Medicines

Ambe Leonel, North West Regional Delegate of Public Health

Ambe Leonel, North West Regional Delegate of Public Health, has called on the media to exercise caution when airing advertisements on traditional medicines, warning that some of these products can be detrimental to public health.

According to Ambe Leonel, the North West Region has seen a surge in cases of kidney and liver diseases, which he attributes to the wrongful use of medications and herbal medicines. He expressed concern that some media outlets often share unverified information about traditional medicines, which can lead to harm to the public.

"Health is a very sensitive domain," Ambe Leonel emphasized. "One wrong communication can cause a very big disaster, and we are already seeing that disaster from our figures."

Ambe Leonel made the call on Friday, May 23, 2025, during a press briefing on the upcoming second round of the National Immunization Days against Poliomyelitis outbreak, which will take place from May 29 to June 1, 2025. The campaign aims to immunize children aged 0 to 5 against poliomyelitis and provide other essential health interventions.

He encouraged the media to work with health authorities to streamline health interventions and prevent harm to the public.

Ambe Leonel also took the opportunity to highlight the benefits of public health facilities, where consultation for children 0 to 5 years is free of charge. He encouraged parents to take advantage of these services and to seek medical attention from trained personnel in health facilities.

The Public health official also highlighted the opportunities available for pregnant women under the health voucher scheme, which provides coverage for essential health services. He encouraged the media to communicate these opportunities to the population, emphasizing that the goal is to reduce mortality and improve health outcomes.
