The Minister of Higher Education, Prof. Jacques Fame Ndongo, has suspended three students of the University of Buea (UB) for two academic years for engaging in examination malpractice.
The decision, signed on April 9, 2025, affects Asawure Princess Ekwaya, Godwin Onyekachi Owowo, and Hannah Enanga Njie, all students of the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences.
The students were found guilty of examination impersonation during the first semester exams of the 2024/2025 academic year. According to the minister's decision, the suspension will take effect from the 2024/2025 academic year, meaning the students will be allowed to re-register from the 2026/2027 academic year.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Buea has been tasked with implementing the decision, which will be registered and communicated to relevant parties.
This incident raises questions about the level of centralization of powers in the higher education sector, with some wondering why a minister of state is directly involved in disciplinary actions against students, rather than the university's internal governance structures.
