Barrister Akere Tabeng Muna, 2025 Presidential Election Candidate.

Yaoundé, May 3, 2025 - As the world commemorates World Press Freedom Day, Akere Tabeng Muna, a former Battonier of the Cameroon Bar, international lawyer, and presidential candidate, has paid tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in pursuit of truth. In a one-page message, the anti-corruption campaigner specifically mentioned the cases of Bibi Ngota, Martinez Zogo, Samuel Wazizi, Anye Ndeh Soh, and Jules Koum Koum, whose, according to him, sacrifices will not be forgotten.

According to him, their memories serve as a stark reminder of the risks journalists face in Cameroon, where threats, arbitrary arrests, and even death are not uncommon. Citing UNESCO, the international legal magnate disclosed that over 1,500 journalists have been killed in the past two decades, with many more imprisoned or harassed.

Press Statement from Barrister Akere Muna.

In solidarity with the press in Cameroon and worldwide, Barrister Akere Muna called for the protection of journalists and the promotion of press freedom. He pledged that, if elected, he would guarantee press freedom, protect journalists from violence, and ensure their right to report without fear.

"A free press is the cornerstone of democracy," Akere Muna emphasized. "No society can thrive without accountability, and no democracy can survive without a fearless press." He urged building a Cameroon where truth is protected, not punished.
