World Press Freedom Day: CAMASEJ Urges Cautious Adoption of AI In Journalism

   Jude Viban, CAMASEJ National President

Yaoundé, May 3, 2025 - The National President of the Cameroon Association of English Speaking Journalists (CAMASEJ), Jude Viban, has issued a statement on World Press Freedom Day, highlighting the challenges and opportunities presented by Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism.

Jude emphasized the importance of harnessing AI's potential while resisting its threats to journalism integrity, safety, and democracy.

As Cameroon approaches a crucial presidential election in October 2025, the CAMASEJ National President stressed the vital role of the media in holding power accountable and giving voice to the voiceless. However, he acknowledged the persistent challenges faced by journalists, including lack of access to information, intimidation, and arbitrary arrest.

Jude recognized AI's transformative potential in automating reporting, analyzing datasets, and amplifying investigative journalism. Nevertheless, he warned against AI-generated disinformation, algorithmic bias, and erosion of public trust in media, particularly in an election year.

To address these challenges, CAMASEJ is undertaking reforms, including establishing a Committee for Ethics and Discipline, modernizing its constitution to embrace digital journalism and AI, and introducing annual awards to recognize outstanding journalists and press freedom champions.

Jude Viban called for solidarity among journalists, urging them to defend press freedom collectively, resist self-censorship, and amplify credible reporting. He emphasized that AI should be used as a tool for truth, not a weapon of division.

"To every journalist here: You are the guardians of democracy. CAMASEJ salutes you," Jude concluded, reaffirming the association's commitment to protecting journalists and upholding press freedom.
