World Press Freedom Day: Environmental Journalists Urged To Navigate AI Challenges

Bamenda, May 3, 2025 - As the world celebrates World Press Freedom Day, Barrister Nchunu Justice Sama, the Executive Director of the Foundation for Environment and Development (FEDEV), has extended a goodwill message to environmental journalists in Cameroon. Barrister Sama acknowledged the crucial role journalists play in reporting environmental concerns nationally and internationally.

According to the environmentalist, this year's theme, "Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media," highlights the opportunities and challenges AI presents in environmental reporting. 

Sama noted that AI can revolutionize environmental reporting by automating data collection, analysis, and reporting, but also poses risks such as misinformation, disinformation, and surveillance threats.

Barrister Nchunu Justice Sama urged environmental journalists to respect media laws and access to environmental information laws in Cameroon, including the 1990 law on freedom of mass communication, the 1996 environmental management law, and the 1996 constitution. Barrister Sama emphasized the importance of critically assessing AI-generated reports and ensuring transparency.

"As environmental journalists, you play a vital role in promoting environmental justice and holding organizations accountable for their environmental impact," Sama said. "We urge you to navigate the challenges of AI while upholding the principles of press freedom and accuracy."

FEDEV appreciates the diligence of environmental journalists in Cameroon and encourages them to continue reporting on environmental concerns while adapting to the evolving media landscape.
