As the nation prepares for the presidential elections set for October 12, a voice of reason and leadership has emerged, urging citizens to engage in the process all the way.

Barrister Nkongho Felix Agbor Balla, President of the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa (CHRDA), has called on Cameroonians to remain vigilant and proactive.

In a recent video address lasting one minute and fifty-six seconds, the seasoned human rights advocate and legal expert highlighted the critical phase the country has entered following the submission of candidacies by 82 candidates and political parties.

Barrister Agbor Balla emphasized the necessity of understanding the electoral process, urging the population not to become complacent but to stay informed as developments unfold.

"This is not merely about the number of candidates; it’s about ensuring that our democratic processes are transparent and equitable," Barrister Agbor Balla stated, reminding citizens that ELECAM, the Electoral Commission of Cameroon, is responsible for meticulously reviewing the submitted candidates.

He underlined the importance of this stage, noting that ELECAM must verify that each candidate fulfills the legal requirements established by the Constitution. For political parties, this means confirming their representation through elected officials in Parliament, the Senate, or municipal councils, as well as demonstrating financial viability with a minimum of 30 million FCFA. Independent candidates face rigorous criteria as well, needing to collect 300 signatures—30 from each of the country’s ten regions—and prove their status as Cameroonians aged 35 or older.

Barrister Agbor Balla reassured the public that ELECAM will issue written notifications to any candidates who are disqualified, clearly outlining the reasons for their rejection. "This transparency is crucial," he noted, explaining that candidates who are not accepted can appeal these decisions to the Constitutional Council, which holds the authority to publish the final list of candidates eligible for the upcoming elections.

Amid the urgency surrounding the electoral process, the CHRDA Chief Executive Officer encouraged citizens to remain calm and patient. "Let us stay alert and engaged as we await the decisions of ELECAM and the Constitutional Council," he urged. "Democracy thrives not only in casting our votes but in understanding the processes that guide our elections."

As the nation navigates this pivotal period, Barrister Agbor Balla has made a clear call to action for Cameroonians to stay informed, involved, and ready to assert their rights. He emphasized that the very foundation of democracy relies on citizens who understand their electoral landscape.

With a significant number of candidates stepping forward, he highlighted the importance of discussing the qualities and visions of potential leaders, proclaiming that the future of Cameroon is at stake, and every voice matters in collectively shaping their democratic destiny.

He urged Cameroonians to unite in support of a transparent and participatory electoral process, asserting that the journey to democracy begins with knowledge of the process and active involvement.
