In a gesture that blends leadership with community development, the General Manager of CAMTEL, Mafor Yah Judith Sunday Epse Achidi, has extended her influence beyond the telecom sector by sponsoring a pioneering road safety campaign for motorcycle riders in Donga Mantung Division in the North West region.

The initiative, held at the Nkambe Multipurpose Hall for Women and Girls, brought together over 100 riders from the five subdivisions of the division. Organized under the coordination of the Divisional Delegate of Transport, Kuete Edith, the campaign was designed not only to educate but also to empower riders with formal driving credentials.

At the heart of the program was a sensitization session on the responsible use of the ongoing ring road project that snakes across Donga Mantung. Riders were introduced to road signs, warned against overspeeding, and reminded of the heavy consequences, both in lives and fines, that can result from reckless behaviour on the highway.

Crucially, the campaign went a step further by allowing participants to undertake examinations for category A licences. For riders who often operate informally, this opportunity marks a gateway to professionalism, dignity, and safer livelihoods.

“This is not just about us riding better, it’s about our future,” one motorcyclist said after the session. “Thanks to Madam Judith, we are being given tools to work responsibly and to protect ourselves and our passengers.”

For the Divisional Delegate of Transport, Kuete Edit, the project is a model worth emulating. She described the sponsorship as a forward-looking investment in human capital. “By empowering motorbike riders with knowledge and licences, Mafor Yah Judith is building safer communities and supporting development in the division,” Kuete Edith remarked.

She equally praised Mafor Yah Judith for her commitment to road safety in the division, emphasizing that such initiatives would go a long way in reducing accidents and preparing riders for the proper use of the ring road.

Following the sensitization, riders took an examination that, once successfully completed, will grant them official Category A licenses.

Speaking at the event, riders expressed gratitude to the CAMTEL GM for what they described as a life-changing opportunity.

A participant from Ako Subdivision, who prefers anonymity said the training gave him a better understanding of road safety.

“At first, I did not master road signs and it was risky for me and my passengers. Today, I am equipped with the knowledge to ride responsibly. I will also share this knowledge with my colleagues who could not attend,” he stated.

Another rider from Misaje Subdivision, who also vied for anonymity highlighted the economic and social importance of the initiative.

“Bike riding is our main source of livelihood, and this training has motivated us to be more responsible on the roads. We hope such programs continue, even extending to taxi drivers when the ring road becomes fully operational,” he said.

The sensitization campaign is expected to have a ripple effect across the division as trained riders return to their communities and act as ambassadors of road safety.

As the riders prepare to receive their licences, the campaign has left a lasting message: development is not only about infrastructure, but also about the people who use it. And for that, many in Donga Mantung are crediting Mafor Yah Judith with showing what visionary leadership can look like.
