With less than two months to Cameroon’s presidential election, the Electoral Board has intensified preparations to ensure the exercise is peaceful and credible.

The Director General of Elections Cameroon (ELECAM), Dr. Erik Essousse, met with the body’s ten regional delegates in Yaoundé from August 22 to 23 for a two-day strategy session. The meeting focused on ironing out logistical and security challenges ahead of the October vote.

Dr. Essousse stressed that ELECAM’s priority is to guarantee a process that is “peaceful, transparent, impartial and objective, as the law recommends.” He said the electoral body has built a track record of credibility and intends to “do even better this time.”

Voter Cards, Security, and Logistics Top Agenda

Key issues discussed included the publication of the final list of candidates, distribution of voter cards, deployment of polling materials within Cameroon and abroad, and securing polling stations in conflict-prone areas.

While praising field agents for their “tireless efforts” in distributing voter cards under difficult conditions, Dr. Essousse urged staff to redouble their commitment. “We know this is a heavy task, but we must do everything within our capacity to succeed,” he said.

Regional Challenges, Regional Solutions

Delegates shared updates on their respective regions, highlighting both progress and obstacles.

Centre Region delegate, Essi Michèle Arlette, noted that much work remains in voter card distribution and in ensuring smooth transfer of electoral materials.

South West delegate, Zofoa Njoya Sake, said security remains a concern in the crisis-hit region but assured that measures are in place for peaceful and inclusive polling.

North West delegate, Mbowoh Elvis, reported that agents are actively distributing voter cards despite operational challenges.

Far North delegate, Joseph Manaoda, highlighted logistical hurdles posed by flooding during the rainy season, but said ELECAM is working with local authorities and security forces to overcome them.

Confidence Ahead of the Polls

Despite regional challenges, all delegates expressed confidence that the October election will be conducted smoothly. The Director General emphasised that close coordination with administrative and security services remains vital to securing a credible outcome.

The Yaoundé meeting, observers say, reflects ELECAM’s attempt to harmonise strategies across the country and reassure voters and stakeholders of its readiness.
