The CICI Championship, a grassroots sports competition born out of grief and transformed into a beacon of unity, is entering its fifth edition with renewed energy and wider participation. At the heart of this initiative is Ndonwi Derick Shu, who has taken up the responsibility of sponsoring and steering the tournament in memory of his late relatives.
The competition traces its origins to 2021, following the death of Mrs. Asoh Concilia (1991–2021) in China. She was the daughter of Pa Shu Petermuno (1926–2020), the renowned founder of the Zoological Snakes Research Center, the first of its kind in Central and West Africa, which once attracted researchers and tourists to Cameroon.
Both Concilia and her father were laid to rest in 2021, and the Shu family sought to honour their legacies by creating a community football tournament. What began as a small initiative for the Njinteh neighbourhood in Bafut has grown into a unifying event.
The CICI Championship was the first sports tournament to be launched in Bafut, the conflict-stricken village in the North West region, at a time when community life had largely been paralyzed by the ongoing crisis.
This year’s fifth edition marks a turning point. Following appeals from the leadership of the Bafut Development Manjong, the Shu family expanded the scope of the competition to cover the entire Bujong village community, bringing together seven villages: Bujong, Njinteh, Njibujang, Manji, Niko, Mbebali, and Mankaha.
“This is more than just football,” Ndonwi Derick Shu told Laarry Times. “It is about revival, unity, and hope for Bafut, especially in these trying times.”
The tournament has drawn unprecedented crowds, igniting excitement across central Bafut. The semi-final clash between Manji and Mankaha is scheduled for August 23, 2025, at the Mankaha stadium, kicking off at 1 p.m. The much-anticipated final will follow on August 29, 2025, with a special concert performance by popular artist Greatston.
For many, the CICI Championship has become a symbolic act of resilience. It carries the legacy of a family that has contributed both to science and to social life in Bafut, while offering young people a platform to showcase talent and a community fractured by conflict a reason to come together.
