Bamenda Breathes: PM Dion Ngute to Break Ground on Long-Delayed Urban Crossing

Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute, Prime Minister and Head of Government.

After several years of frustration and repeated delays, Bamenda is finally set to see work begin on the long-awaited 6.2-kilometre Urban Crossing. Prime Minister, Head of Government, Chief Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute, is expected in the North West regional capital on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, to officially launch construction at Veterinary Junction, a move widely seen as a relief for residents who have endured crumbling roads, economic losses, and daily hardship.

The project, delayed largely by disputes over a 32-metre road width imposed by municipal authorities, has been one of the city’s most contentious issues. For years, residents have been forced to navigate choking dust clouds during the dry season and near-impassable mud during the rains, conditions that frequently damage vehicles and slow business.

The Prime Minister’s visit will not only signal the start of the Urban Crossing but also feature a series of key infrastructure events: the official reception of the 26-billion-franc Bamenda-Babadjou road, inspection of ongoing works on the Ecole des Champions–Amour Mezam stretch (currently 54% complete), and the laying of the foundation stone for the Mile 4 market administrative block.

In what locals consider a long-overdue relief, Dr. Dion Ngute will also preside over the official reception of the rehabilitated Mile 4 bridge, a critical link that has long been a nightmare for students and residents who are often stranded during heavy rains.

This visit comes exactly two months after the Prime Minister last chaired the 7th Steering Committee Meeting of the Presidential Plan for Reconstruction and Development (PPRD) in Bamenda, underscoring the government’s renewed focus on the region’s reconstruction and economic revival.
