The ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) officially launched its presidential campaign in the Northwest Region with a massive rally at the Bamenda Congress Hall, turning the city into a political stage for what party officials described as “a vote for peace, experience, and the future.”
Philemon Yang, Head of the CPDM Central Committee Permanent Regional Delegation for the Northwest and former Prime Minister, delivered a rousing keynote address, praising the resilience of Bamenda residents and calling on them to reaffirm their trust in President Paul Biya.
“Bamenda is the city of the future,” Yang declared to thunderous applause. “The opposition talks about age, but leadership is not about age, it is about vision, experience, and competence. Criticizing President Paul Biya is not a project; it is not a plan. Cameroonians must choose a leader who can deliver, and that leader is Paul Biya.”
Achievements and Vision for the Future
Yang outlined what he described as President Biya’s enduring legacy, citing democratic reforms, the opening of political space since 1990, major infrastructure projects, and his role as a statesman who kept Cameroon united and respected on the international stage.
“He is not perfect, no one is but he is a builder, a humanist, and a visionary,” Yang said. “From roads to universities, from health centers to stadiums, from dams to digital innovation, President Paul Biya has shaped this nation. And he is asking for another mandate to complete the projects already started and launch new ones that will transform Bamenda and Cameroon at large.”
He stressed that the president’s next mandate would focus on consolidating peace, improving purchasing power, empowering women and youths, accelerating decentralization, and pushing Cameroon toward economic emergence.
Women and Youth Rally Behind Biya
Massanga Louise, speaking for the CPDM Women’s Wing, celebrated President Biya’s policies that have uplifted women in the Northwest, citing the creation of the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and the Family, the appointment of Northwest women to top state positions, and improved maternal healthcare through universal health coverage and subsidized delivery kits.
“President Biya has transformed the Northwest woman from a housewife into an entrepreneur,” Massanga said. “He has given us senators, parliamentarians, and administrators. If we vote for him on October 12, more women will enter government and more lives will be transformed.”
Jokwe Foncha Idriss, speaking for the youth wing, emphasized Biya’s investments in education, reconstruction of schools destroyed during the Anglophone crisis, and creation of economic opportunities.
“The University of Bamenda, christened the ‘University of the Future,’ is one of the best in the country,” Idriss said. “President Biya is the only candidate with a vision for the youth. He has forgiven our brothers in the bush and offered them reintegration through DDR centers. The youth of the Northwest must vote massively for the most experienced candidate.”
Call to Mobilize for October 12
The event ended with a powerful call for unity and full participation on election day. Yang urged CPDM militants and sympathizers not to stay home but to “give birth again to the party that was born in this very hall.”
“All President Biya is asking is that we love our country passionately, persevere, persist, and be patient,” Yang concluded. “On October 12, vote for the candidate with the budget, the candidate with the vision, the candidate with the experience. Vote for Paul Biya.”
As chants of “Paul Biya! Paul Biya!” echoed through the hall, the CPDM’s message was clear: the ruling party intends to secure a sweeping victory in the Northwest by presenting President Biya as the only candidate capable of delivering peace, unity, and development in one of Cameroon’s most politically sensitive regions.
