The Social Democratic Front (SDF) is set to officially kick off its campaign for the October 12 presidential election in Bamenda, the birthplace of Cameroon’s main opposition party. The announcement was made over the weekend by the party’s North West Regional Chairman, Fongu Cletus Tanwe, during an enlarged regional meeting held Saturday, September 20, 2025.

The high-stakes meeting, chaired by Fongu Cletus, who also doubles as the Mayor of Bamenda III Council, brought together district and regional executives of the SDF to strategize for what many observers consider the most decisive election since the party’s creation.

Bamenda Chosen for Symbolism

Speaking to party faithful, Fongu Cletus stressed that launching the campaign in Bamenda carries deep political and historical significance.

“Bamenda is the cradle of the SDF. It is where our founding father, the late Ni John Fru Ndi, gave Cameroon a new hope for multiparty democracy,” he said. “It is also where our National Chairman, Hon. Joshua Osih, deposited his candidature. There is no better place to start this campaign than here.”

The launch will take place on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at the Bamenda Commercial Avenue Grandstand and shall be presided over by Hon. Osih Joshua himself, who is also the SDF’s presidential flagbearer.

Call for Massive Mobilization

Fongu Cletus called on SDF supporters and the entire population of the North West Region to turn out in their numbers for the launch event.

“This is not just a rally; it is a call to action,” he said. “We want everyone to come, hear our message, and understand our plan for peace, economic recovery, and a better future for Cameroon.”

He further tasked the regional campaign manager and district chairs to embark on door-to-door mobilization after the launch to ensure voters are engaged ahead of election day.

Focus on Peace and Development

In a speech that resonated with many in attendance, the SDF regional chair said the SDF remains the only party with a credible plan to address the Anglophone crisis and rebuild affected communities.

“Our vision is clear: we want to restore peace, reopen schools, rehabilitate roads, and revive the economy,” he declared, adding that the SDF stands ready to work for a Cameroon where every citizen feels heard and valued.

Campaign Machinery Already in Motion

Regional Campaign Manager Yong Emmanuel assured the party faithful that his team is prepared to penetrate both rural and urban areas with the SDF message despite the difficult security environment.

“All our districts in Mezam, Boyo, Menchum, and Momo have completed their list of polling agents,” Yong said. “We are ready to defend every vote and ensure the will of the people is respected.”

As the countdown to September 27 begins, the SDF hopes its campaign launch in Bamenda will rekindle the spirit of the early 1990s when the party shook Cameroon’s political establishment and gave millions of citizens a voice.
