On the eve of Cameroon’s much-anticipated presidential election, the City Mayor of Bamenda, Tambeng Paul Achobong, has called on residents to maintain peace, discipline, and civic pride as they head to the polls on Sunday, October 12.
Speaking in a few hours to the press in his capacity as City Mayor, Vice Section President of Mezam I-A, and Vice Campaign Team Member for Mezam, the mayor described the just-ended campaign period as “a remarkable display of maturity and political tolerance,” praising the people of Bamenda for conducting themselves in an exemplary manner.
“We have had a campaign period that started on September 27 and ends today, October 11. I am honoured to say that not a single case of campaign violence, accident, or misconduct has been reported. The people of Bamenda have shown political maturity and responsibility,” Mayor Achobong declared.
The mayor lauded the political class for maintaining decorum throughout the campaign, noting that parties had used the period to present their ideas and achievements rather than to provoke division.
“Political parties in Bamenda have exhibited their skills, their ideas, and their readiness to serve. They have shown what democracy truly means, competing through ideas, not through violence,” he said.
With the campaign officially closing at midnight, the mayor turned his message toward election day, urging every registered voter to exercise their right peacefully and return home responsibly after casting their ballots.
“Tomorrow is the day of the elections. I entreat every Bamenda citizen to go straight to the polling stations where their names are inscribed, vote for their candidate, and return home with comfort and joy for having fulfilled their civic duty,” he said.
Emphasizing security and civic order, Mayor Achobong reminded residents that Bamenda’s image as the “City of the Future” depends on the collective behaviour of its people.
“Our city can only be the city of the future if its people act accordingly, shunning violence, embracing unity, and standing together for progress,” he stressed.
He cautioned against any provocation or attempt to disrupt the peace during and after the voting process, urging residents to associate only with “good people” who have the city’s well-being at heart.
“Stay away from anyone who preaches violence. Share company with those who love Bamenda, those who build, not destroy,” he advised.
As he concluded his press outing, the City Mayor, accompanied in the press statement by Dr. Taniform Peter, CPDM Mezam 1A Section President, offered a heartfelt prayer for peace, safety, and divine protection over Bamenda and its people.
“After the elections and the proclamation of results, together, we will build a better Bamenda, a Bamenda of the future. God bless you all, protect you as you go to vote, and bring you home safely. Amen.”
