Global Peace Champion and Executive Director of Reach Out Cameroon, Omam Njomo Esther has expressed profound sorrow following the death of Mrs. Zouhaira, a primary school teacher in Garoua, who was reportedly struck by a stray bullet amid post-election tensions in northern Cameroon.

In a statement issued on Wednesday October 22, 2025, the country chair of G100 Monitoring and Motivation described the incident as “a tragic reminder of how fragile peace can be when dialogue breaks down and when the concerns of citizens remain unheard.”

Mrs. Zouhaira’s death, which has sent shockwaves through the education community, occurred during a period of heightened political and social tension following recent electoral disputes. The details surrounding the shooting remain unclear, prompting growing calls for accountability and reform.

“As a mother, an educator at heart, and a peace advocate, I mourn her loss and extend my heartfelt condolences to her family, colleagues, students, and community,” she said. “No Cameroonian should ever lose their life while simply going about their daily duty of service.”

Omam Esther emphasized that the tragedy should serve not as a source of division but as a call for reflection and unity. “This is not a moment for blame, but for collective reflection, a moment to rebuild trust, restore communication, and reaffirm our shared humanity,” she stated.

Calling for an independent and transparent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Mrs. Zouhaira’s death, she urged authorities to ensure that justice is served and that lessons are drawn to prevent similar tragedies.

“Peace cannot be sustained through silence or suppression,” she warned. “It must be nurtured through listening, empathy, and fairness. The true strength of a nation lies not in force but in its ability to hear, to heal, and to unite.”

The peace advocate concluded her statement with a heartfelt tribute: “May Mrs. Zouhaira rest in peace. May her memory strengthen our resolve to make Cameroon a nation that listens, protects, and values every life.”

The death of Mrs. Zouhaira has reignited debate on the protection of civilians and educators in conflict-prone regions, as well as the urgent need for peacebuilding and inclusive dialogue in Cameroon’s ongoing political landscape.
