The Hydrocarbons Prices Stabilization Fund (HPSF) has officially commissioned a modern Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) filling centre in Bamenda in the North West region. Coming after a few months after the inauguration of the state-of-the-art centre, this marks a major step in improving access to affordable domestic gas in the North West Region and neighbouring localities.

The ultra-modern facility, located at Bangshie in Bamendakwe, was commissioned on Friday December 12, 2025, in the presence of administrative authorities, energy sector stakeholders, traditional rulers and members of the public. The project forms part of the government’s broader strategy to decentralise gas supply infrastructure and ensure equitable access to energy nationwide.
Okie Johnson Ndoh, Director General of HPSF.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the Director General of HPSF, Okie Johnson Ndoh, said the Bamenda filling centre underscores the institution’s commitment to making domestic gas available, secure and affordable for Cameroonian households. According to him, gas remains a basic necessity, and its availability at regulated prices is central to the government’s social policy.

“The choice of Bamenda is strategic,” Okie Johnson explained. “By bringing supply closer to consumers in the North West Region, we reduce transport costs, secure supply chains and ensure that households have uninterrupted access to domestic gas.”

A State-of-the-Art Facility

Constructed on a 6.25-hectare site, the Bamenda LPG Filling Centre has a total storage capacity of 200 metric tonnes, made up of two tanks of 100 metric tonnes each. The facility is fully automated and designed for future expansion, with two additional bases already in place.

It is equipped with a 12-station filling carousel capable of filling between 600 and 650 gas cylinders per hour, making it the largest LPG filling centre currently in operation in Cameroon. The centre is expected to supply gas not only to the North West Region but also to the neighbouring West Region.
Before now, gas marketers in Bamenda and surrounding areas depended largely on filling centres in Bafoussam, a situation that often led to supply shortages and additional costs.

Affordable Gas Through State Subsidy

With the operationalisation of the centre, consumers in the North West Region will be able to purchase the 12.5 kg domestic gas cylinder at the officially approved price of 6,500 FCFA. The price is made possible through a state consumption subsidy borne by the HPSF.

The HPSF Director General described the subsidy as a clear demonstration of the Head of State’s commitment to improving living standards and reducing the cost of living. He stressed that the North West Region has not been left out of the government’s social support measures.
“Gas is now available at the same subsidised price enjoyed in other regions of the country,” he said. “This is the President’s largesse, and the North West has not been forgotten.”

He further called on the population to make effective use of domestic gas, highlighting its environmental and health benefits. According to him, increased use of LPG will help reduce deforestation and protect women and families from illnesses linked to smoke from firewood and charcoal.

Economic Impact and Infrastructure Support

Beyond household consumption, the HPSF boss said the availability of reliable energy supply is expected to stimulate economic activity in Bamenda and the wider region. He expressed optimism that the filling centre would contribute to the revival of the local economy by supporting small businesses, industries and services.

“With energy comes industrialisation, and with industrialisation comes economic growth,” Ndoh said. “We want to see a new Bamenda and a new North West full of economic activities.”

To support the smooth functioning of the facility, the government has also initiated complementary infrastructure projects. These include a 245 million FCFA electricity extension project to power the centre, as well as plans for a 4.4 billion FCFA double-lane access road, which is expected to be included in the 2026 state budget. In the meantime, road maintenance works are ongoing to ensure easy access for trucks and business operators.

HPSF–SCDP Partnership Strengthened

The Cameroon Petroleum Depot Company (SCDP), national operator in charge of petroleum storage and logistics, will manage the operational aspects of the filling centre. According to Gabriel Eteke, Deputy General Manager of SCDP, the Bamenda facility represents a major achievement in Cameroon’s energy history.

“This filling centre is a concrete response to the growing energy needs of the North West and West Regions,” Eteke said. “It will ensure a regular and reliable supply of domestic gas at a fair price.”

He noted that while SCDP is responsible for filling and logistics, gas sales will be carried out by licensed marketers and distributors, who will supply retailers and consumers. The centre will handle the reception of LPG trucks, cylinder filling of all sizes and loading of bulk LPG trucks.

Security and Administrative Support

The Governor of the North West Region, Adolphe Lele Lafrique, welcomed the project and praised HPSF and its partners for delivering the facility despite challenges. He assured the public that security measures have been put in place to safeguard the installation, workers and users.

“This achievement shows that security conditions have improved and that the region is ready to support development projects,” the Governor said, while calling on the population to remain vigilant and cooperate with security services.

Towards Balanced National Development

The commissioning of the Bamenda LPG Filling Centre adds to existing facilities in Maroua and Bertoua, with additional centres under construction in Ebolowa and Kumba. The initiative aligns with the national policy championed by President Paul Biya, which places energy at the heart of development and seeks to reduce regional disparities.
