Fabrice Lena, a Cameroonian political activist who escaped from Douala Central Prison, has declared his innocence and accused authorities of politically motivated persecution, as security forces continue a nationwide search for him.
Lena fled custody on December 12, 2025, while being escorted back to prison from the Bonanjo Court of First Instance. The escape, carried out under circumstances that remain unclear, has embarrassed prison authorities and prompted an intensified manhunt.
In a statement released after his escape, Lena alleged that senior prison officials extorted 1.5 million CFA francs from him, promising a temporary prison leave. He claims that after only five days, he was returned to detention without explanation, which he described as illegal and dangerous.
Feeling betrayed and fearing for his life, Lena said he activated what he called an “intelligence unit” to facilitate his escape, with assistance from unidentified accomplices, some of whom he claims are members of the security forces.
Lena also accused his lawyer, Barrister Richard Tamfu, of betraying him and collaborating with “the enemy.” The lawyer has rejected the accusations, stating that he worked to secure improved detention conditions for his client and denying any involvement in the actions taken against him.
The case has polarized public opinion. Judicial authorities maintain that Lena was arrested in connection with an alleged forged documents case, reportedly related to presidential election results. However, his supporters and several political activists argue that the charges were fabricated, citing his political alignment during the last presidential election.
Lena openly supported opposition figure Issa Tchiroma Bakary and acknowledged Tchiroma’s claimed “victory” following the vote. The Constitutional Council later confirmed President Paul Biya as the winner, a decision that was followed by the arrest of several Tchiroma supporters nationwide.
As of publication, Cameroonian authorities have not responded to Lena’s allegations. His current location remains unknown.
