The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon (PCC), Rt. Rev. Miki Hans Abia has issued a message of deep condolence following a devastating fuel tanker accident that rocked Likomba in the Tiko municipality of the South West Region on Friday.
According to reports referenced by the PCC, the tragedy occurred when a fuel tanker suffered a mechanical failure, leading to a collision and a massive explosion in a densely populated residential area.
The incident claimed several lives, left many with severe burn injuries, destroyed homes and vehicles, and displaced families. Some of the injured are said to be in critical condition and are currently receiving medical care.
In a statement released from the Office of the Moderator in Buea, Rt. Rev. Abia expressed profound sorrow over the loss of life and the scale of destruction caused by the explosion.
Speaking on behalf of the entire Presbyterian Church in Cameroon, he extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and conveyed solidarity with the injured, the displaced, and all residents traumatized by the disaster.
“This tragic occurrence has brought immense pain to families and the wider Likomba community,” the statement read, emphasizing the Church’s closeness to those affected in their moment of grief.
Beyond words of sympathy, the PCC Moderator called on Christians, congregations, and people of goodwill across the country to observe a minute of silence and to pray earnestly for the victims. He urged prayers for comfort for grieving families, healing for the injured, and strength for the community as it confronts the aftermath of the tragedy.
Quoting Psalm 34:18 — “The LORD is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit”, Rt. Rev. Abia underscored the Church’s message of hope and compassion amid sorrow.
The Likomba incident adds to growing concerns over road safety and the transportation of hazardous materials in residential areas. As investigations continue, faith leaders, civil authorities, and humanitarian actors are expected to rally support for affected families.
