At least 14 civilians were killed early morning hours of Wednesday January 14, 2026, after armed attackers stormed Gidado village in Ndu Sub-Division, Donga-Mantung Division, according to an official statement issued by the Governor of the North West Region, Adolphe Lele Lafrique.
The assault occurred at about 5:30 a.m. when a group of armed men, identified by authorities as terrorists from Bui Division, opened fire on homes in the village, startling residents from their sleep. The victims include a 40-year-old man, six women and seven children aged between two and eleven years, the governor said.
Ten other persons were wounded in the attack, among them two children who are currently receiving treatment at the Nkambe Regional Hospital Annex. The government has taken responsibility for covering the medical expenses of the injured.
In addition to the loss of life, the attack caused extensive material damage. Six houses, two granaries, one vehicle and one motorcycle were burned. Eight motorcycles were stolen, a mosque was riddled with bullets, 15 cows were killed and seven others injured.
In a statement released the same day, Governor Lele Lafrique expressed condolences to the bereaved families and sympathy for the wounded. “On behalf of the Government, I extend heartfelt sympathy to the families affected by this tragic loss and wish the injured a speedy recovery,” the statement read.
The governor strongly condemned what he described as a “barbaric act on unarmed civilians” and called on residents of the region to remain calm. He said Defence and Security Forces have launched a manhunt to track down the perpetrators and bring them before competent judicial authorities.
Governor Lele Lafrique also urged the population to cooperate closely with administrative authorities and security forces to help identify and apprehend those responsible.
Addressing armed youths still in hiding, he reiterated the government’s call for them to surrender their weapons and take advantage of the final offer of forgiveness announced by the Head of State during his inaugural address on November 10, 2025, and to enroll in the National Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (NDDR) programme.
