The Cameroon Bar has announced a new minimum consultation fee for legal services in the North West Region. The move is aimed at standardizing professional practice and reinforcing accountability within the legal profession.
The decision was made public on January 27, 2026, through an official notice signed by Njie Jude Mokom, Esq., the Bar President’s Special Delegate for the North West Region. The notice follows a resolution adopted by lawyers resident in the region at a meeting held on January 23, 2026.
Under the new directive, consultation fees are fixed at a minimum of 100,000 CFA francs for all prospective clients seeking legal advice from advocates practicing in the North West. The fee must be officially receipted and represents the baseline amount, above which lawyers may negotiate depending on the nature, urgency, and complexity of the legal brief.
The Bar’s North West representative stressed that the resolution is binding on all advocates operating within the region. Any lawyer found charging below the stipulated minimum or failing to issue an official receipt will be liable to disciplinary sanctions, in accordance with the rules and regulations governing the Cameroon Bar.
Beyond fee regulation, the measure reflects the Bar’s broader commitment to professional ethics, transparency, and the protection of both lawyers and clients. It also seeks to curb unhealthy competition and undercutting among practitioners, practices that have long raised concerns within the profession.
Legal analysts note that the decision comes at a critical time for the North West Region, where ongoing security challenges have increased the complexity of legal work and heightened the demand for competent and responsible legal representation. By setting a minimum consultation fee, the Bar aims to uphold professional standards while ensuring that legal services are delivered with seriousness and due diligence.
Members of the public seeking legal services in the North West Region have been urged to take note of the new fee regime and to demand official receipts for all consultations, as required by the Cameroon Bar.
