Sen. Regina Mundi Commends Media Role in Tackling Maternal Mortality in the North West

Senator Elizabeth Regina Mundi, Senator for the North West Region and a leading advocate for maternal healthcare, has commended journalists in the North West Region for their commitment to highlighting maternal health challenges and driving public awareness through responsible reporting.

She made the remarks on Friday, January 16, 2026, during the close of the two-day North West Media Forum organized by the Cameroon Association of English-Speaking Journalists (CAMASEJ), Bamenda Chapter. Attended by the North West governor, the Regional Delegate of Communication, on behalf of his Minister, Bamenda II Mayor on behalf of Minister Felix Mbayu, the event took place at the Banquet Hall of Admiralty Hotel in Upstation, Bamenda.

Addressing participants, Senator Regina Mundi described it as a profound honour to speak at a forum that recognizes the importance of maternal health reporting. She expressed gratitude to the organizers for giving maternal healthcare a prominent place in the program and praised journalists for their tireless efforts in gathering and disseminating vital information to the public. 

According to her, the media’s role in shedding light on maternal health issues remains instrumental in catalyzing meaningful change within communities. The senator acknowledged the journalists who participated in the maternal health reporting competition, noting that their work has the potential to touch lives, spark important conversations and ultimately save lives.

She emphasized that every participant’s contribution was valuable, regardless of the final outcome, and encouraged media practitioners to continue championing maternal healthcare as a collective responsibility.

Highlighting the need for sustained collaboration, Senator Regina Mundi extended her appreciation to the organizers, members of the jury and all participants for their unwavering commitment to what she described as a noble cause. She reaffirmed her readiness to continue working with the media to amplify maternal health awareness and expressed hope for a future where every woman has access to quality healthcare and maternal mortality becomes a thing of the past.

During the ceremony, the Chapter President of CAMASEJ Bamenda, Sah Terence Animbom, unveiled the winners of The Regina Mundi Prize for Maternal Health Reporting, which was assessed on a score over one hundred percent. Mbah Nadine Abefoin emerged first with a score of 85.3 percent for her report titled Born in Crisis.

She took home a brand new laptop and a cash prize, while Sylvia Waindim followed closely with 84.4 percent for her report, Post Partial Depression. Raymond Dingana, journalist and manager of Abakwa FM Radio, scored 72.6 percent for his report titled Curbing Maternal Mortality.

Senator Regina Mundi, a grassroots politician, philanthropist, North West elite and survivor of the Anglophone Crisis after spending thirty days in captivity, was praised for her continued advocacy for vulnerable women and mothers across the region.

The forum ended with renewed calls for journalists to remain committed to public interest reporting and to continue using their platforms to promote safer motherhood and improved healthcare outcomes in Cameroon.
