As the world prepares to mark International Women's Day on March 8, former parliamentarian Fobi Nchinda Simon has delivered a message of solidarity and renewed commitment to the women and girls of the Bamenda-Bali constituency. He urged communities to prioritize rights, justice and concrete action.
In a statement released on Friday, March 6, 2026, ahead of the global celebration, the former Member of Parliament for the Bamenda/Bali constituency in the North West Region of Cameroon acknowledged the resilience of women in the face of social and economic challenges while calling for greater collective responsibility in protecting their rights.
A Message of Solidarity
Addressing “mothers, sisters and daughters,” Hon. Fobi emphasized that this year’s International Women’s Day theme, Rights, Justice, Action for all Women and Girls reflects the realities many women continue to face.
He noted that the theme is not only symbolic but a reminder of the responsibility shared by communities, institutions and families to ensure that women and girls enjoy equal opportunities and protection. “The theme speaks to the reality many still face and the responsibility we all share to act with purpose,” he stated.
Focus on Empowerment and Opportunity
During his tenure as a legislator, Fobi highlighted efforts made to support women’s empowerment in the constituency. According to him, initiatives were designed to strengthen families and promote community development by uplifting women economically and socially.
These efforts included support for small income-generating activities, encouragement of girls’ education and increased participation of women in community life.
He stressed that the guiding principle behind such initiatives has always been clear which is expanding opportunity while promoting dignity and fairness. “Whenever women are strengthened, families become more stable and communities progress,” he noted.
Persistent Challenges
Despite progress in some areas, the former lawmaker acknowledged that many obstacles remain for women and girls in the region. He pointed to the limited access to economic opportunities for women and the continued barriers that prevent many girls from fully accessing education. Concerns about violence and insecurity affecting women and girls also featured prominently in his message.
Hon. Fobi warned that rights and justice must be tangible and accessible rather than symbolic. “Justice must not be distant or selective. Rights must not exist only on paper,” he said.
Call for Collective Responsibility
The message concluded with a call for concrete action from all sectors of society. According to him, communities must actively protect women from abuse, institutions must enforce laws fairly and consistently, and families must encourage the ambitions of daughters just as they do for sons. He also praised the resilience of women in Bamenda during difficult times, saying their strength has helped sustain hope within society.
“As we mark this day,” he said, “may it renew our shared commitment to ensuring that rights are respected, justice is accessible, and meaningful action continues for all women and girls.”
International Women’s Day is celebrated annually around the world to recognize the achievements of women and to advocate for gender equality and the protection of women’s rights.
