As Cameroon joined the rest of the world to commemorate International Women’s Day, North West Senator Elizabeth Regina Mundi has re-echoed a powerful message calling for justice, equality, and stronger protection of women and girls across the country.

Speaking under this year’s global theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,” Senator Mundi urged Cameroonian women to remain united and vigilant in defending their rights while demanding greater accountability from national leaders.

“Today, we stand united as women, young and old, demanding justice, equality, and rights. Women’s rights are human rights,” she said in a message marking the occasion on Sunday March 8, 2026.

Rising Concerns Over Violence Against Women

Senator Mundi used the moment to highlight the growing concern over violence against women in Cameroon. She noted that cases of domestic abuse, partner-related killings, and other forms of gender-based violence have continued to affect families and communities. According to the senator, such acts cannot continue without firm action from authorities and society as a whole.

“We have seen women murdered by their partners, abused, and silenced. But we will not be silenced,” she declared, calling on women across the country to stand together and seek justice for victims of violence.

She stressed that protecting women must be a national priority and urged government institutions to enforce laws that safeguard women’s rights.

A Voice from the North West

A prominent figure from the North West Region, Senator Mundi is widely recognized as a grassroots politician and philanthropist who has spent decades advocating for maternal healthcare and social development initiatives within local communities.

Her voice carries particular weight in the region, where communities continue to grapple with the effects of the Anglophone Crisis. The senator herself survived a harrowing ordeal during the crisis, spending thirty days in captivity before regaining her freedom an experience that has shaped her advocacy for peace and resilience.

Despite the challenges, she has continued to promote women’s empowerment, access to healthcare for mothers, and community-driven development.

A Call for Unity and Action

Marking the global celebration, Senator Mundi urged women across Cameroon in general and the North West region in particular to remain focused on asserting their rights while also fulfilling their responsibilities as citizens and community leaders. “As we celebrate today, let us assert ourselves, claim our rights, and fulfill our obligations,” she said.

She emphasized that unity among women is key to advancing gender equality and ensuring that their voices are heard at all levels of governance.

Message to National Leaders

Beyond addressing women directly, Senator Mundi also issued a clear appeal to policymakers and authorities. “To our leaders, we expect action. Protect women, enforce laws, and promote equality.”

She called for stronger enforcement of existing legal frameworks designed to protect women and for policies that ensure equal opportunities in education, healthcare, and economic participation.

A Day of Reflection and Determination

International Women’s Day in Cameroon was marked by gatherings, advocacy campaigns, and public messages emphasizing women’s empowerment. For Senator Elizabeth Regina Mundi, the day served not only as a celebration but also as a reminder of the work still required to secure dignity, justice, and safety for women across the nation.

In her message, she repeatedly echoed togetherness, solidarity and determination as being the key ingredients for a sustainable fight against gender-based violence, women's and girls' rights and protection. “Together, let’s make Women’s Day a call to action for a safer, fairer Cameroon. Our rights are non-negotiable.”
