MTN Cameroon-BeSafe Consortium has received Cameroon’s National Road Safety Award for developing a digital system aimed at reducing traffic accidents and improving passenger safety.

The award was presented during the National Road Safety Forum in Yaoundé, recognizing cooperation between the private sector and the Ministry of Transport on road safety initiatives.

The consortium was honoured for “Ym@ne Driver”, an artificial intelligence-powered monitoring system designed to detect risky driving behaviour in real time.

The technology utilizes onboard cameras and automated monitoring tools to detect signs of fatigue, distraction, speeding, and other hazardous driving behaviours. Alerts are then sent to drivers and remote monitoring centres to allow rapid intervention.

According to MTN Cameroon, more than 500 vehicles equipped with the system have recorded no fatal accidents since its deployment. The company also says the platform has detected thousands of traffic violations, helping improve driver discipline and passenger safety.

The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Cameroon said the award reflected the company’s commitment to protecting road users and highlighted the role of cooperation between public institutions and private companies in promoting innovation for public safety.

Franck Gérard Kom, General Manager of MTN Cameroon’s Enterprise Business Unit, said the Ym@ne Driver system was developed to provide a practical response to road safety challenges by helping anticipate risks and support drivers in real time.

Road accidents remain a significant concern in Cameroon, with authorities continuing efforts to strengthen transport safety and reduce fatalities on major roads.
