The government of Cameroon has pledged to strengthen efforts to combat femicide and violence against children. This comes following a sharp increase in reported cases across the country.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Yaoundé on Monday, June 1, 2026, Communications Minister and government spokesperson René Emmanuel Sadi described the trend as "deeply regrettable" and a threat to social stability.
Minister Sadi said 50 women were killed in 2023, rising to 67 in 2024 and 77 in 2025, with figures recorded so far in 2026 indicating the upward trend is continuing.
He also highlighted a series of recent cases involving the rape and murder of children, including incidents in Yaoundé, Douala, Kribi and Manjo, many of which allegedly involved relatives or people known to the victims.
The minister said the government had expanded support for victims through psychosocial care, legal assistance, temporary shelters and specialized police and gendarmerie units. He added that awareness campaigns, child protection measures and law enforcement efforts would be reinforced.
Minister Sadi called on communities, religious leaders, civil society groups and citizens to work alongside authorities in preventing violence and reporting offenders.
The press conference brought together officials from the ministries responsible for women's empowerment, social affairs, public health and justice, as well as representatives of the police and security services.
