The founder and CEO of St. Louis Clinic and University Institute, Dr. Nick Ngwanyam, a veteran surgeon, has outlined a fresh set of proposals aimed at reshaping governance in Cameroon. The educationist argues that the country's future depends on leadership renewal and institutional reform.
In a policy statement shared on social media, the promoter of the 3rd Option Government movement likened national renewal to clearing ash from a charcoal stove to allow a stronger fire to burn, saying Cameroon must replace outdated systems with new ideas and productive leadership.
He argued that regular changes in leadership within public institutions and community organizations would inject fresh energy, improve innovation and strengthen decision-making.
Dr. Nick Ngwanyam also called for a smaller and more streamlined government, proposing the merger of several ministries to reduce duplication and improve administrative efficiency.
He suggested that sectors with related responsibilities, particularly those covering education, youth, vocational training and research, be brought under a single ministry.
The healthcare entrepreneur further advocated greater participation by women and young people in public administration, saying appointments should be based on competence, integrity and measurable contributions to society rather than political affiliation or previous public office.
He also proposed expanding the responsibilities of local authorities as part of broader decentralization efforts, arguing that empowering communities would improve governance and service delivery.
On education, Dr. Nick Ngwanyam reiterated his call for reforms that place greater emphasis on technical skills, innovation and entrepreneurship. He said Cameroon should draw lessons from countries that have successfully linked education to industrial and economic growth.
He also urged stronger support for media and digital content that promotes education, skills development, responsible citizenship and national cohesion, while discouraging content he believes contributes little to social or economic progress.
Dr. Nick Ngwanyam said the reforms form part of the 3rd Option Government's vision of building a more productive, accountable and competitive Cameroon capable of achieving long-term economic development.
