The Ministry of Finance has suspended the Municipal Treasurer and Finance Clerk of Zhoa Council in Menchum Division, North West Region, following a financial audit that uncovered alleged irregularities.
The suspension of Doh Eric Motia, the Municipal Treasurer, and Umarou Mohamadou, Finance Clerk, comes weeks after the two officials accused the Mayor of Zhoa Council of financial misappropriation and the collection of unauthorized taxes.
The allegations against the mayor were reportedly contained in a complaint submitted to authorities, prompting a control mission by the Treasury Audit Department of the Directorate General of Treasury, Financial and Monetary Cooperation.
However, a subsequent audit report dated July 24, 2026, accused the Municipal Treasurer and Finance Clerk of financial breaches, including irregular reporting, concealment of accounting documents, failure to report discrepancies, and obstruction of inspection procedures.
The Ministry of Finance said Umarou Mohamadou allegedly played a role in concealing financial irregularities, including the absence of supporting documents and duly signed payment vouchers.
Doh Eric Motia was also suspended following findings from Treasury control missions, which reportedly revealed accounting and financial management concerns at the council.
The Treasurer Paymaster General in the North West Region has proposed the appointment of Yong Christian Ngong, Senior Contract Officer and Chief of Service for Regional and Local Authorities, as interim Municipal Treasurer pending a permanent replacement.
The suspensions have added a new chapter to the dispute over financial management at Zhoa Council, with authorities expected to continue investigations into the allegations raised by both sides.
