Ewane Roland, the Divisional Officer (DO) of Idabato Subdivision in Ndian Division of the South West Region, has been freed after 168 days in captivity. The civil administrator was abducted on October 1, 2024, by gunmen believed to be pirates from neighboring Nigeria.
Upon his release, Ewane was received by the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Dr. Chief Joseph Dion Ngute, who expressed relief and joy at the administrator's safe return. "We rejoice for you, we rejoice for your wife, we rejoice for your children, and we rejoice for our country," the PM said.
Ewane also met with the Minister of Territorial Administration, Atanga Nji Paul, who commended the DO's courage and determination during his captivity. The minister revealed that President Paul Biya had given firm instructions for all necessary measures to be taken to secure Ewane's release.
The Governor of the South West Region, Bernard Okalia Bilai, accompanied Ewane to the meetings with the PM and MINAT boss. He used the opportunity to call for respect of state laws by foreign communities in the Bakassi area.
Ewane's wife, Rose, expressed gratitude to the President, PM, and Cameroonians for their support during the difficult period. She said her husband's release is a "call for celebration" and that "tears of sorrow have become tears of joy."
The freed DO will undergo medical checks before resuming his duty post. Efforts are still being made to secure the release of Etongo Ismaiel, the council staff kidnapped alongside Ewane.
