World Press Freedom Day: PCC Communication Team Urged To Harness AI Responsibly

Buea, May 3, 2025 - Rev. Dr. Perpetua B.N. Fonki, National Communication Secretary of the Presbyterian Church of Cameroon (PCC), has issued a message to the staff of the Communication Department, emphasizing the importance of responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption in media. Fonki's message coincided with World Press Freedom Day 2025, themed "The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media."

Rev Perpetua Fonki acknowledged AI's transformative potential in media, enabling rapid data analysis, insight generation, and content creation. However, she stressed the need for human values, truth, ethics, and integrity to remain at the heart of journalism.

The Communication Secretary urged the team to understand, embrace, and utilize AI responsibly, ensuring it enhances storytelling without replacing professional judgment. She emphasized the importance of maintaining credibility and human conscience in reporting, particularly in a world prone to deepfakes and algorithmic biases.

Rev Perpetua Fonki's message highlighted the evolving role of journalists in the AI age, where press freedom extends beyond broadcasting and publishing to ensuring technology serves humanity, not manipulation. She called on the team to harness AI as a partner, balancing innovation with integrity, and using technology to promote truth and humanity.

"Let us lead with knowledge, report with wisdom, and speak with power," Rev Perpetua Fonki concluded, wishing the team a Happy World Press Freedom Day.
