The modern market, constructed through the Ministry of Trade, was delivered thanks to the tireless lobbying of Minister Mbah Acha Rose Ngwari Fomundam, Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of the Supreme State Audit and head of the CPDM Central Committee Permanent Divisional Delegation for Momo.

Returning to her birthplace, the Minister described the occasion as deeply personal, recalling her childhood and education at GS Nyenjei, the very grounds where the ceremony was held.

“I am particularly happy to return to my roots. This market is a promise fulfilled. What others could not achieve in over 20 years, the CPDM government has realized in just one year under the leadership of President Paul Biya,” Minister Mbah Acha declared to thunderous applause.

She urged the population to put the facility to effective use and to continue prioritizing education, noting that she had already forwarded the needs of Nyenjei’s schools to the Ministries of Basic and Secondary Education.

The newly constructed market comprises a spacious open shed with 35 lock-up stalls, five closed shops, and a modern toilet facility. According to the Regional Delegate of Trade for the North West, Ghogumu Abel Foncha, who represented the Minister of Trade, the project aligns with the government’s commitment to promote rural trade and improve the livelihoods of farmers and small-scale traders.

“This market will not only serve as a hub for agricultural products but also as a platform for economic growth in Nyenjei and beyond,” he noted.

The Mayor of Batibo Council, Acha Kennedy Ngu, in a rousing welcome address, hailed the project as an eloquent testimony of the government’s investment in Batibo, one of the most populated subdivisions of Momo Division. He promised council support in maintaining the market, announcing that solar streetlights would soon be installed to ensure safety at night.

Equally emotional was the speech of the National President of the Nyenjei Development Association, Werebesi Som Richard, who lauded the government for the long-overdue project, stressing that the market will help villagers commercialize their farm produce while providing avenues for youth employment.

Traditional rulers also added their voices. HRH Moyah Mbahnwi Joseph, Fon of Nyenjei, described the Minister as “a mother hen who protects her chicks,” emphasizing that the market would serve as the “gateway to Batibo.” He called on villagers to sustain peace and continue supporting their “daughter of the soil.”

Similarly, HRH A.M. Nanji, Fon of Numben Village, explained that the traditional blessings conferred on the Minister were meant to shield her against adversity and pave the way for greater achievements.

The event, which drew a high-level delegation, also carried political undertones, as Minister Mbah Acha encouraged the population to show gratitude to President Paul Biya by turning out massively during the upcoming elections.

“Fear no intimidation. Come out and vote for the party of development,” she urged.
Beyond politics, however, the day was about development and renewal. Villagers sang and danced, celebrating not just the arrival of a modern commercial hub but also the return of peace in a community once affected by crisis.

As the Nyenjei Market goes operational, hopes are high that it will become the “world market” locals fondly describe, a bustling center of trade, cultural exchange, and opportunity, befitting its strategic position at the gateway to Batibo.
