The Bamenda City Council has announced a city-wide Environmental and Human Capital Investment Day scheduled for 23 December 2025. In a flyer making rounds on social media, the Bamenda city council called on all residents and institutions to take part in a massive clean-up exercise aimed at restoring the city’s environment and improving public health.

According to a public notice released by Paul Achobong Tembeng, City Mayor of Bamenda City Council, the clean-up campaign will take place from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and will cover the entire city of Bamenda. The initiative reflects the Council’s growing concern over poor waste management and environmental degradation, which officials say threaten both the well-being of citizens and the sustainable development of the city.

Mayor Achobong stressed that the exercise goes beyond sanitation. It is also intended to promote environmental awareness and responsible waste management at the household level. He further encouraged residents to adopt simple but effective practices such as sorting waste by type, clearly labelling waste bins, and processing organic waste like food remnants and leaves into compost that can be reused to enrich backyard soil. Non-organic waste is expected to be collected separately and recycled through approved channels, transforming what is often seen as refuse into items of potential economic value.

The public notice further highlights the importance of the “three Rs”, reducing, reusing, and recycling as a sustainable approach to waste management.

Residents are being urged to find creative ways to reuse everyday items, including turning used water containers into flower pots or old tires into household furniture, as part of a broader effort to minimize waste.

Participation in the clean-up has been declared mandatory for all sectors of the city. The Bamenda City Council has directed that offices, business premises, markets, hospitals, churches, and private homes must all be actively involved. By mobilizing citizens across social, religious, and economic lines, the City Mayor hopes to foster a culture of collective responsibility and civic pride.
