The Esu Fondom on Tuesday December 16, 2025, officially installed Fon Meh Buh II, born Fidelis Nfuia, as its new traditional ruler, ending nearly four years of vacancy on the throne. This historic move marks a major milestone in the restoration of traditional authority in the area.

The installation followed the completion of all customary rites by Esu kingmakers and elders and was formally recognized by administrative authorities.

The ceremony was supervised by the Senior Divisional Officer for Menchum Division, Abdoulahi Aliou, alongside the Divisional Officer for Fungom Subdivision, Garba Oumaru, signifying state approval of the succession process.

Throne Filled After Prolonged Vacancy

The enthronement comes almost four years after the assassination of Fon Kum Achuo Kaw Zuh Albert II and his wife, Queen Bibiana Mbong, on March 9, 2022, while returning from Weh after the enthronement of the Fon of Weh. Their deaths left the Esu Fondom without a substantive ruler and plunged the community into a prolonged period of uncertainty.

Royal Lineage and Legitimate Succession

Fon Meh Buh II ascends the throne from a well-established royal lineage. His great-grandfather, grandfather and father all previously ruled Esu, making him the only known successor in recent history to come from three consecutive generations of Fons.

Educational and Leadership Background

The new Fon is a product of GS Esu, GHS Wum, GBHS Deido, and the University of Yaoundé II, Soa, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Law and a Maîtrise in Political Science. Members of the Esu community describe him as calm, disciplined and approachable qualities widely seen as assets for leadership at this sensitive time.

The new ruler pledged to lead an inclusive and reconciliatory administration and reaffirmed his allegiance to administrative authorities.

He expressed readiness to work closely with government officials to promote peace, security and development, while also stressing his commitment to protecting Esu's ancestral land.

The installation ceremony was attended by several traditional rulers and dignitaries, including the Fon of Maga from Nigeria, as well as notable personalities from across Menchum Division. Their presence underscored the cultural importance of the event and the spirit of regional solidarity.
