Akere Muna has appealed for humanitarian and reconciliation measures ahead of Pope Leo XIV's visit to Yaoundé, Cameroon, on March 16, 2026.

Akere Tabeng Muna, lawyer and former president of the Cameroon Bar Association, as well as former president of the Economic, Social, and Cultural Council of the African Union (ECOSOCC), has addressed a formal appeal to the president of the Republic of Cameroon, calling for measures of clemency, humanitarian relief, and decongestion of detention connected to political incidents.

Akere Muna also transmitted an appeal to the competent authorities of the Holy See, requesting that Pope Leo XIV be informed of the initiative ahead of his scheduled visit to Cameroon from 15 to 18 April 2026. A copy of the letter to the head of state was equally transmitted.

"The Holy Fathers' visit should be an opportunity for hope and reconciliation," Batonnier Muna said. "In situations of conflict, the initiative for peace must come first and foremost from the party that holds power. Concrete gestures lawful and compassionate-can help open a pathway to dialogue."

The appeal highlights several categories of detainees, including: the leaders commonly referred to as the "Nera 10" (including Sisiku Julius Ayuk Tabe), whose life sentences are currently under appeal before the Supreme Court; other emblematic detainees such as Mancho Bibixy; persons held under administrative detention, particularly in the Anglophone Regions; the humanitarian case of detained mothers held with infants in Bamenda; and persons arrested following post-electoral events connected to the 2018 and 2025 presidential elections.

Akere Muna emphasized that the initiative is non-partisan and grounded in Cameroon's constitutional and legal frameworks, as well as humanitarian considerations and the imperative of national unity.
