A devastating fire outbreak has severely damaged the head office of the United Youths Organization (UYO), raising concerns about operational continuity and the loss of vital resources.
The incident occurred on the night of Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at approximately 9:00 PM in Mile 2 Nkwen, within the Bamenda III Subdivision. According to official communication released by the organization, the fire spread rapidly, engulfing a significant portion of the premises before it could be contained. The blaze caused extensive material damage, destroying critical office infrastructure and equipment essential for the organization’s day-to-day operations.
Preliminary reports indicate that items lost in the fire include laptops, desktop computers, printers, photocopiers, networking devices, office furniture, and other machinery. In addition, key administrative files and project documentation were also consumed by the flames, representing a major setback for the organization’s ongoing initiatives.
The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of UYO, Melvin Songwe Shuye, described the incident as a difficult moment for the organization but emphasized resilience in the face of adversity. “This is a challenging time, but it does not define us. Our commitment to empowering young people and serving our communities remains unwavering,” he stated.
Authorities, including the local fire department, are currently collaborating with UYO to determine the cause of the fire. Investigations are ongoing, with assurances from the organization that the process will be conducted transparently. Meanwhile, internal assessments are being carried out to evaluate the full extent of the losses and identify recovery priorities.
Despite the destruction, UYO has swiftly initiated contingency measures to sustain its operations. Temporary workspaces have been secured, and efforts are underway to ensure that essential programs continue without major disruptions. The organization has also reassured partners, stakeholders, and beneficiaries that all ongoing projects remain a priority.
The incident highlights both the vulnerability of nonprofit institutions to unexpected disasters and the importance of resilience planning. For UYO, the road to recovery may be challenging, but its leadership remains focused on rebuilding and continuing its mission to support youth development across the region and beyond.
