Traditional Leader Mourns Victims of Nkwen Bridge Tragedy

A solemn message of condolence has been issued by Njie Mbonde Albert, Chief of Membea Bokwaongo Village in Buea, to Azehfor III, following a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Nkwen.

In his message addressed to the Fon of Nkwen, the senior CRTV journalist cum traditional ruler expressed “immense shock” upon learning of the collapse of a makeshift bridge in the Fondom. This incident resulted in the loss of several lives.

Speaking on behalf of the people of Membea Bokwaongo, he conveyed heartfelt condolences and solidarity during what he described as a deeply painful moment. “We are deeply saddened and share in your grief. Grief is the price we pay for the love for our people,” the message read, emphasizing communal empathy and shared mourning between the two traditional institutions.

The tragedy occurred on Thursday, March 26, 2026, in Mile 2 Nkwen, within the Bamenda III Subdivision. According to reports, a heavy water current swept away several unidentified individuals crossing a temporary bridge constructed by BUNS, a road construction company carrying out ongoing road work in the metropolis. The structure had been put in place to facilitate ongoing bridge construction works in the area.

Rescue efforts began promptly the following day, led by the army rescue unit under Senior Warrant Officer Taku Paul. Working in collaboration with local residents, the team recovered three bodies, all women believed to be over the age of 40. After completing administrative and medical procedures, the remains were transferred to the mortuary of the Bamenda Regional Hospital, where they await burial arrangements.

In his closing remarks, Chief Njie Mbonde Albert invoked both spiritual and ancestral support, stating, “We join you and your people in prayer that Jehovah and our ancestors may grant us the power and comfort in these trying times.” The message concluded with a reaffirmation of respect and solidarity. “Your Majesty, accept our deepest regards.”
