MTN Foundation Cameroon backs girls to shape digital future

The MTN Foundation Cameroon has used this year’s Girls in ICT Day to highlight the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping opportunities for young women.

The event took place at the Open Dreams Digital Center, where schoolgirls gathered under the theme “AI for Development: Girls Shaping the Digital Future.” Throughout the day, participants were introduced to digital technologies through practical sessions and guided workshops. Many also enrolled in free online courses via the Skills Academy platform, gaining certificates in key digital competencies.

Organizers say such initiatives aim to bridge the gender gap in technology by equipping girls with skills relevant to a rapidly evolving digital economy, particularly in areas such as AI.

A standout moment came when a hearing-impaired participant shared her experience, offering a message of perseverance that resonated strongly with others in attendance.

The Executive Secretary of the foundation, Danièle Mbome, underscored the importance of equal access to digital learning. “Every girl deserves the opportunity to dream, learn, and thrive in the digital world. This is how we build a more inclusive future,” she said.

Another attendee described the impact of the session on her confidence. “Seeing someone like me succeed despite challenges gave me confidence. I know now that nothing is impossible,” she said.

The initiative is part of ongoing efforts by the MTN Foundation Cameroon to expand access to digital education and prepare young people, especially girls, for careers in technology.
