Akere Tabeng Muna, International Anti-Corruption Advocate
Leading Cameroonian legal guru and infatigable anti-corruption advocate, Akere Tabeng Muna has paid tribute to the country’s journalists, commending their role in upholding truth, accountability and democratic values.
In a statement issued in Yaoundé on World Press Freedom Day, on Sunday, May 3, 2026, Barrister Akere Muna expressed “sincere recognition and solidarity” with media professionals across the nation. He stressed that a free and responsible press remains indispensable to good governance. “Even in difficult and demanding conditions, journalists continue to inform the public, amplify the voices of the unheard, and hold those in power to account,” he said.
The veteran lawyer and former president of the Bar, associated with anti-corruption efforts and institutional reform in Cameroon, underlined that press freedom is not optional but fundamental to justice, transparency and national development.
Observers have frequently pointed to challenges faced by journalists in Cameroon, including legal constraints and concerns over safety.
Against this backdrop, the former 2025 presidential candidate highlighted the importance of protecting media workers and ensuring they can operate without undue interference. “Freedom of the press is not a privilege,” he said. “It is a right and a necessary condition for progress.”
He encouraged journalists to remain steadfast in their mission, describing their work as vital to the country’s future.
World Press Freedom Day, commemorated each year on May 3, serves to promote independent journalism worldwide and to recognise those who continue to report under pressure.
