Buea Chiefs Accuse Colleague of Misappropriating Delegation Funds

       Official Complaint From the Chiefs.

A group of traditional leaders from Buea, Cameroon’s South West Region, have filed a formal complaint with the National Gendarmerie in Buea, accusing one of their peers of misappropriating funds intended for a collective delegation.

In a letter dated Sunday, May 4, 2026, addressed to the Legion Commander of the National Gendarmerie in Buea, HRH Chief Ikoma Philip Mokwa, President of the Buea Subdivisional Conference of Traditional Rulers, alleged that Chief Etuge Augustin unlawfully took three million CFA francs given to the group.

According to the complaint, the delegation had travelled to Yaoundé to congratulate the Speaker of the National Assembly on his recent appointment. During the visit, the Speaker reportedly offered the group the sum of three million CFA francs to cover transportation costs.

The chiefs say they agreed to reconvene at their hotel to share the money equally. However, they claim that Chief Etuge Augustin failed to appear. “When contacted on the phone, he said we can't do him anything; he has taken all the money,” the complaint states.

The alleged incident left members of the delegation stranded in Yaoundé without funds to pay for accommodation or transport back to Buea. The group says they were forced to find their own means to return. “God alone knows how we managed to return,” the letter adds.

The complainants are now calling on the National Gendarmerie to intervene and compel the accused chief to return the full amount, which they insist should be redistributed among all members of the delegation.

They expressed confidence in the authorities, stating that they trust the “astute and regal manner” of the Legion Commander in handling the matter.

As of now, there has been no public response from Chief Etuge Augustin or the National Gendarmerie regarding the allegations.
