Hon. Theodore Alexandre Mbe Essae Mendomo, Deceased MP for Djoum.

Cameroon’s parliament is in mourning following the death of Hon. Théodore Alexandre Mbe Essae Mendomo, a member of the National Assembly representing the Djoum constituency in the Dja-et-Lobo division.

The lawmaker reportedly died after having taken ill at the Yaounde General Hospital, though further details have not been publicly disclosed. A member of the ruling Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM), Hon. Mendomo was known for his reserved demeanour but steady engagement in legislative work. He served as chairman of the Economic Affairs Committee in the National Assembly of Cameroon, where he played a role in shaping discussions around economic policy and development.

Throughout his political career, he was regarded as a prominent advocate for the Dja-et-Lobo division, particularly on issues concerning local development and economic growth. Colleagues described him as a committed parliamentarian who contributed consistently behind the scenes.

His death further reduces the number of sitting lawmakers in the 180-seat assembly. With his passing, the total number of deceased members of parliament in the current legislature now stands at 23, including the demise of former House speaker, Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril.

The recent succession of deaths among MPs has raised concerns within political circles in Cameroon, although officials have not indicated any broader underlying cause.

Tributes have been pouring in from fellow lawmakers and government officials since his passing, and the National Assembly is also expected to honour his service and contributions to public life.

In the past month alone, Cameroon has lost over four members of both the Lower and Upper Houses of Parliament. Hon. Niat Njifenji, Hon. Nfor Tabetando, Hon Mbe Asae Alexandre and Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril who passed on at 86.
