Employees of Cameroon Telecommunications (CAMTEL) have marked this year’s International Labour Day with a blend of celebration and reflection, as the company’s leadership pointed to recent achievements while urging renewed commitment from staff.

The event took place on Friday, May 1, 2026, at the Camtel Club in Yaoundé, where workers gathered to commemorate the annual day dedicated to labour rights.

Addressing staff, the General Manager, Judith Yah Sunday épouse Achidi, praised employees for what she described as their resilience and dedication, which she said had contributed to significant operational successes over the past year.

Among the highlights, she cited CAMTEL’s role in ensuring telecommunications coverage during major international events hosted in the capital, including the 14th WTO Inter-Ministerial Conference and the apostolic visit of Pope Leo XIV. “These achievements strengthen our ambition to accelerate our transformation,” she told the gathering.

The company, she said, is continuing efforts to modernize its infrastructure by expanding its fibre optic network and reinforcing its national backbone, alongside rolling out digital tools aimed at improving customer access to services.

A major boost to these plans came in March 2026, when Cameroon secured CFAF 108 billion in financing from China Exim Bank for the fourth phase of the national backbone project.

According to General Manager, the investment will help improve service quality and extend connectivity to more remote parts of the country while also strengthening the reliability of existing networks. She described the funding as both an opportunity and a responsibility, urging staff to match the scale of investment with greater performance and discipline.

The General Manager also delivered a firm warning against practices she said continue to hinder the company’s growth, particularly fraud. She stressed that efforts to combat fraudulent activities would remain a priority, adding that those involved risk facing disciplinary and legal action. Concerns were also raised about absenteeism, indiscipline, and unethical conduct within the workforce.

The Labour Day event concluded a week-long series of activities organized by staff, including a sports walk across the city, awareness sessions on workers’ rights, a football tournament, and a visit to an orphanage.

Celebrations culminated in a march-past along the May 20 Boulevard, where CAMTEL employees were among the most visible participants.

As the company looks to expand its digital footprint, its leadership has signaled that maintaining momentum will depend not only on investment in infrastructure but also on the conduct and commitment of its workforce.
