A Cameroonian human rights activist, Sally Ndape, remains in custody at the Gendarmerie Legion in Buea, in the country’s South West Region, following her arrest on April 30, 2026.
At the time of reporting, at least 11 complainants have filed cases against Sally Ndape, according to sources familiar with the matter, including legal practitioners and individuals directly involved in the complaints. Efforts to secure her release on bail have so far been unsuccessful.
Allegations raised by complainants
Several allegations have been cited by those involved in the case as reasons for her continued detention. One of the principal accusations relates to alleged impersonation. Members of the Cameroon Bar Association claim the human rights defender presented herself as a legal practitioner without formal qualification. Some lawyers allege she intervened in legal matters where she was not authorized, at times invoking connections with judicial officials.
Questions have also reportedly been raised about academic credentials she has used publicly.
Another issue concerns alleged evasion of legal process. Lawyers involved in the case say Sally Ndape failed to respond to two formal summonses and declined to receive a third, according to a bailiff’s report. She was later detained after presenting herself voluntarily to give her account.
There are also questions surrounding her reported handling of an arrest warrant. A complainant identified as Chi has asked how Sally Ndape came into possession of a warrant issued in his name, given that she is not authorized to execute such documents. The warrant was reportedly shared on social media, and its authenticity has been disputed. During an interaction on May 4, 2026, at the gendarmerie, an officer is said to have distanced himself from the document.
Defamation and online conduct
Several complaints relate to alleged defamatory statements made online. Barrister Ewule Lyonga is among those who have reportedly filed cases accusing Sally Ndape of spreading false information. These claims appear to constitute the largest group of complaints against her.
A UK-based social media personality known as Mama Atalaku has also revived a complaint alleging that Sally Ndape used insulting and vulgar language against her and her family. A video reportedly containing the statements has circulated and was viewed by officials.
An additional complaint has been filed by a Canada-based individual identified as “Cameroon Revolution,” who alleges Sally Ndape made accusations of fraud, illegal immigration status, and involvement in separatist activities. According to the complainant, Canadian immigration authorities contacted him following these claims, after which he was reportedly cleared. He is now seeking evidence to support the allegations made against him.
Other concerns raised
Some complainants have also cited alleged interference in legal proceedings, suggesting that Sally Ndape’s perceived influence may have affected the progression of certain cases. These claims remain unverified.
Separately, concerns have been raised about a screenshot attributed to Sally Ndape, which allegedly contains threatening language. Those who submitted the complaint say they consider the remarks serious and want them included in the case file.
Divided views on bail
On the sidelines of proceedings, one complainant reportedly expressed willingness to withdraw her complaint following discussions with civil society actors, including NGO representatives. However, authorities indicated that any withdrawal would need to follow formal judicial procedures once the case reaches court.
Public reaction has been mixed, particularly on social media, where the case has drawn significant attention. Some individuals have voiced support for Sally Ndape’s release on bail, while others oppose it, citing concerns she may not comply with legal procedures if released.
There have also been indications that further legal action may be taken against individuals who made public statements following her arrest. Authorities are reportedly reviewing comments made online about the case.
Awaiting legal response
As of now, it has not been possible to obtain comment from Sally Ndape’s legal representatives. Before her arrest, she was known in some circles for her advocacy on behalf of vulnerable groups. If the case proceeds to court, one of the key issues is expected to be whether she will be granted bail to prepare her defense.
Many of the allegations against her are linked to statements and activities on social media, highlighting the growing role of online platforms in legal disputes in Cameroon.
