A new doctoral study has found that social media is playing an increasingly important role in advancing the mission of the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon (PCC), with Facebook and WhatsApp emerging as the church's most effective digital platforms for communication and pastoral engagement.
The findings were presented on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, during the defense of a PhD dissertation by Rev. Numfor Godwin at Wesley University, Ondo, Nigeria.
The research examined how five social media platforms—WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube, X, and Instagram—are being used to support the PCC's mission and ministry.
According to the study, Facebook and WhatsApp were the most widely used platforms, helping to improve communication, strengthen fellowship, and extend pastoral care beyond traditional face-to-face interactions.
The research concluded that digital platforms have enabled church leaders and members to remain connected, particularly where distance or other challenges limit physical meetings.
Following the defense, Rev. Numfor was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree after his dissertation received an A grade.
Speaking after the successful defense, Rev. Dr. Numfor thanked the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon, Rt. Rev. Miki Hans Abia, for his support and encouragement throughout his academic journey. He also expressed gratitude to the PCC and former church leadership for providing the opportunity to combine ministry with further studies.
Based on his findings, Rev. Dr. Numfor recommended that the PCC adopt a hybrid ministry model that combines digital outreach with traditional pastoral care. He also urged the church to invest in digital infrastructure and training to equip ministers and members with the skills needed to use social media effectively and responsibly.
The study comes as churches across Africa increasingly embrace digital platforms to strengthen worship, communication, and community engagement.
Rev. Dr. Numfor began his doctoral program during the 2023/2024 academic year. His degree is expected to be formally conferred during Wesley University's convocation ceremony in November 2026.
